Today’s digital world has made living easier because we can now basically do a lot of things with the use of our digital devices. This includes the Google Nest Thermostat, which allows you to remotely take control of the entire home’s heating and cooling anywhere you may be. But, if you plan on moving to a new home and you are now selling your old house, can you now transfer your Nest Thermostat to a new homeowner?
You can easily transfer the Google Nest Thermostat to a new owner by removing yourself as the old owner from your own account and then transfer the device to the new homeowner’s account instead. You are basically doing it digitally as well without even tampering with the Nest Thermostat.
The digital age we live in has become so easy for a lot of us that even transferring the controls over a remotely controlled thermostat can be as easy as tinkering with your smartphone. But let’s not stop there because there are still a lot of things you need to know about how to transfer your Google Nest Thermostat to a new owner and whether or not you can even take it with you if you are planning on moving to a new home.
Can You Transfer A Nest Thermostat To A New Homeowner?
What Is A Nest Thermostat?
As we move further and further into the digital age, we are now learning how to integrate even the regular activities we do into our own little digital world. Nowadays, we do everything remotely by making use of our smartphones or our mobile devices. This includes doing our purchases online, paying our bills with a tap on our phone, and doing our banking on the go with just a few simple steps on our mobile devices. The digital age has truly made everything easy for us.
But being able to do our day to day tasks was never enough for us because companies have now integrated even the simplest tasks into that small digital space we live in. Yes, most homes nowadays can be controlled using our phones as a simple tap on the phone can control the home’s security system and lights. Of course, this includes the home’s thermostat as well. That is where Google Nest comes in.
Google Nest Thermostat is a programmable smart thermostat that you can use to remotely control your home’s heating and cooling with a simple tap on your smartphone. On top of that, it is also a learning thermostat that you can program to automatically adjust to your schedule so that you don’t even have to use your phone to control the heating and cooling in your home. Google Nest can even use a mode where it can tell whether or not there are people in the house so that it won’t have to waste energy heating or cooling your home.
This neat little device can be controlled by any family member with just their smartphones, mobile devices, and laptops wherever they may be. As such, it is basically a part of the entire home and also accompanies each member of the household wherever they may be.
Can You Transfer Nest Thermostat To Someone Else?
But what if you are planning on moving to a new home and you don’t intend on carrying with you your Google Nest Thermostat in the new place you are moving into? What happens to the Nest Thermostat when you leave it behind after selling your old home to a new owner? Are you still the owner of that Nest Thermostat with all of the privileges of being able to control the heating and cooling of the house even if you are no longer the homeowner? Or can you transfer such a privilege to the new owner instead?
Well, when you are using a Google Nest Thermostat, what happens here is that you are tying it together with your account such that, by using that account and registering the device with that account, you are able to take control of the Nest Thermostat.
So now, when you are planning on selling your old home together with the Google Nest Thermostat, you can actually transfer the privileges of that device over to the account of the new owner. What happens there is that you can no longer take control of the thermostat using your own account because you have already transferred it over to the new owner.
How To Transfer a Nest Thermostat to a New Homeowner
If you want to transfer a Google Nest Thermostat over to a new homeowner, here is a simple step-by-step guide on how you can do it:
- Open your Nest app and select the Home you would like to change (if you are controlling more than one home with one single Nest app under your name).
- Go to the Settings option and then look for the device you would want to remove from that Home.
- Look for the Google Nest Thermostat that has been attached to that Home and then choose to remove it from that Home so that the device or product will no longer be attached to your account. You are basically removing your control and ownership over the Nest Thermostat.
- Allow the new owner to do the necessary steps to tie the Nest Thermostat into his or her own account so that he or she will now become the new owner of that device.
Another way for you to do it is to perform a factory reset on the Nest Thermostat so that it will forget all of your personal details and allow the new owner to input his or her own details on it. Here is how you do it:
- Press the thermostat ring on the Nest Thermostat so that you can open the Quick View menu where you can change the settings of the device.
- Locate the Settings option and select it. This is where you will be performing the factory reset.
- Go to the Reset option and then choose to reset All Settings so that everything on the device gets a reset. This erases all of your personal information and will allow the new homeowner to take over the Nest Thermostat after you have left it to him or her when you sold the house including the device.
Can You Take Your Nest Thermostat When You Move?
We have talked about the possibility of you moving to a new house and selling your old house together with the Google Nest Thermostat. But what happens if you decide to move to a new house but you want to bring the Nest Thermostat with you in the new home when you move in? Can you take your Nest Thermostat with you?
Well, if you sold the house before you took the Nest Thermostat out, then the bad news is that you cannot take it with you. The reason is that your thermostat is a part of your house’s fixtures similar to how the countertops, light switches, and drawers are a huge part of your entire house. In that sense, you cannot take it with you when you leave.
However, there can be a loophole to that if you decided to move to a new home before you placed your old house on the market. If you moved to a new home and you decided to keep the old house, you may be able to take your Nest Thermostat with you to your new home. The safe bet here is to make sure that you do so long before you placed your old house on the market or else your Nest Thermostat would end up as a necessary fixture in the house.
Another alternative that you can do so that you can bring your Nest Thermostat with you to your new house is before you decide to sell your old home is to swat the Nest Thermostat with a cheaper alternative so that the old house will still come with the necessary fixture, which is the new but cheaper thermostat, and you still end up with your Nest Thermostat.
But, just to be on the safe side, you have to ask your real estate agent first to make things clear so that you won’t end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit if you decide to bring our Nest Thermostat with you when you move into your new home.
